Adjusting to Your Hearing Instrument

You have taken the most important first steps. You've had your hearing tested and purchased your hearing instruments. So what's next?

Regardless of your type of hearing loss or hearing instruments, it's important to realise hearing instruments will not restore normal hearing. Hearing instruments are only a substitute for original hearing. Proper use will help you live a normal life. But without them your hearing will most certainly be handicapped.

Most people with a hearing loss wait an average of seven years before seeking help. During this period, your brain gradually adapts to your loss. When you first begin using your new hearing instruments, you'll hear unfamiliar sounds that you haven't heard for many years. Don't expect instant success. The process takes time and requires a strong commitment on your part, along with patience and a few words of encouragement from family, friends, and your local ihear professional.
